Gatherland

A quiet category challenge

Gatherland

Give teams the same category and a set amount of writing time. There is no need to shout answers. Compare responses afterwards and ask teams to explain their choices. Agree what counts before starting so ambiguity becomes discussion rather than conflict.

Adjust to the number of prompts and writing time
Participants
Teams or a whole-group discussion
Materials
Paper, pens and prompt cards

How to use it

  1. Choose a prompt, clarify its constraints and set the writing time.
  2. Discuss one follow-up question about a team's choice before moving to the next round.

Running a round

Read the category and constraints and invite clarification. Teams write until time is called, then take turns sharing one answer and checking whether other teams matched it.

Play without scores, or agree one point per valid answer with matching answers still counted. Resolve uncertain responses through the agreed criteria rather than introducing new rules mid-round.

Use the prompts to start a conversation

Categories can draw on everyday experience without asking for private information. Participants can dictate to a teammate, and the facilitator can extend writing time. Participation matters more than speed.
