Getting there
Sheung Wan station on the Island Line is the main stop, with exits near the waterfront and Connaught Road Central. It is also an easy walk from Central. The trams' Sheung Wan terminus is near Western Market, so you can ride all the way from the east of the Island. The Macau Ferry Terminal is in Sheung Wan too.
The waterfront is flat, but streets heading uphill are steep. Allow walking time for venues around Hollywood Road or higher up.
Main roads are busy, side streets are narrow and loading space is limited, so public transport is the easier option.
What venues are like here
Most venues are in older commercial buildings, mixed-use blocks and walk-up tenements, with some in newer commercial towers. Units in older buildings are smaller, but windows, ceiling height and period details give them character, which suits shoots and workshops. Tenements may have no lift, and commercial buildings may have separate entry arrangements at night and at weekends.
The area has many galleries and design shops, and venue fit-outs tend to be simple or vintage in style.
What it's good for
- Workshops and small classes: craft, painting or flower-arranging sessions fit these spaces well.
- Photo shoots: older interiors and natural light suit lifestyle, product and small shoots. See Sheung Wan photo studios.
- Small get-togethers and birthdays: groups of up to about ten, with plenty of places to eat nearby.
- Meetings: close to Central but less crowded, good for small teams.
Practical tips
- For venues up the slopes, arrange a car to drop off anything heavy at the door.
- Entrances to older buildings can be easy to miss, so check the street number on a map before you set off.
- For natural-light shoots, book a daytime slot and check the venue photos for window direction.
- Residential and mixed-use buildings have neighbours, so keep the volume down at night.
