Getting there

Tai Kok Tsui lies west of Mong Kok and is served by three stations:

  • Olympic (Tung Chung line): on the western side near Olympian City, the most direct option from Hong Kong Island, Lai King, Tsing Yi and Tung Chung.
  • Mong Kok and Prince Edward (Tsuen Wan and Kwun Tong lines): on the eastern side, about 10 to 15 minutes' walk west from Nathan Road.

Buses and minibuses connect the area with Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po. Older streets are narrow with limited parking; the newer estates and malls have car parks.

What venues are like here

Tai Kok Tsui was once a shipyard and light-industry district. A few older industrial buildings remain alongside many tenements and a growing number of new residential estates. Venues include industrial units and studios in older mixed-use buildings: party rooms, photo studios, dance studios, rehearsal rooms and mahjong rooms.

Industrial units are roomier, but check gate hours and goods-lift arrangements. Tenement venues may have no lift and share the building with residents, so keep noise down at night.

What it's good for

  • Birthdays and gatherings: more space than in Mong Kok, on quieter streets.
  • Shoots: the mix of old and new buildings gives the streets character.
  • Rehearsals: industrial units suit dance and music practice.

Compare with nearby Mong Kok, Prince Edward and Sham Shui Po.

Practical tips

  • Allow time to walk: it is 10 to 15 minutes from Mong Kok station.
  • Shop at Olympian City: the mall near Olympic station has supermarkets and restaurants.
  • Plan for stairs: walk-up buildings need extra hands for bulky items.
  • Give delivery riders full details: write the building, floor and unit clearly.
  • Check last trains: for late finishes, check the last Tung Chung and Tsuen Wan line trains or plan an overnight bus.
