Getting there

Kowloon City had no MTR station until the Tuen Ma line opened. Now Sung Wong Toi station has exits leading through a pedestrian tunnel into the centre of Kowloon City, a few minutes' walk away. Lok Fu station (Kwun Tong line) to the north is another option, but the walk is longer.

There are many bus and minibus routes to the rest of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Streets are narrow and parking is scarce, especially on holidays.

What venues are like here

Kowloon City sat under the old Kai Tak airport flight path, and building heights were restricted, so most buildings are low-rise older mixed-use blocks, with redevelopment only arriving in recent years. Venues are mostly in older flats: mahjong rooms, board game rooms, studios and small party rooms. Spaces are small to mid-sized, and many keep the character of the old buildings.

Older buildings rarely have a management office and some have no lift. With residents above and below, rules on noise and hours are stricter at night.

What it's good for

  • After-dinner gatherings: Kowloon City is a well-known food district, so dinner then mahjong or board games is an easy plan.
  • Small celebrations and couples: cosy rooms, with parks nearby for a walk.
  • Shoots: the low-rise buildings and streets have an old Hong Kong feel.

Practical tips

  • Plan dinner timing: weekend evenings are busy, so allow for queues before your slot.
  • Be ready for stairs: walk-ups are common, so bring extra hands for drinks and the cake.
  • Somewhere to walk: Kowloon Walled City Park and Sung Wong Toi Garden are both nearby.
  • Respect the neighbours: keep it down at night and avoid chatting on the stairs when you leave.
  • Book ahead: weekend evenings are popular, and calendars open 90 days ahead.
