Getting there

Since the Tuen Ma line fully opened in 2021, To Kwa Wan has two stations: To Kwa Wan station, under Ma Tau Wai Road in the middle of the district, and Sung Wong Toi station to the north, near Kowloon City and Ma Tau Chung. Hung Hom and Ho Man Tin are also within walking distance.

Plenty of buses and minibuses run to other parts of Kowloon. Streets are narrow and parking is limited, so driving is not recommended.

What venues are like here

To Kwa Wan is mostly older mixed-use buildings, with a lot of redevelopment under way. Venues are usually in older flats or above street-level shops: studios, craft classrooms, mahjong rooms, board game rooms and small party rooms. A few industrial buildings offer larger units suited to photo studios and rehearsals.

Older buildings rarely have a management office, and lifts are small or absent. Because they are shared with residents, expectations on noise at night are stricter.

What it's good for

  • Small gatherings: mahjong or board games with a few friends in a relaxed setting.
  • Workshops and classes: the area has a number of community and creative spaces suited to craft classes.
  • Shoots: the older streets and the waterfront around Hoi Sham Park photograph well.

Compare with nearby Kowloon City, Hung Hom and Ho Man Tin.

Practical tips

  • Plan for stairs and small lifts: bring extra hands and allow time.
  • Local food: plenty of neighbourhood restaurants and markets.
  • Somewhere to walk: Hoi Sham Park and the nearby waterfront are good for before or after.
  • Respect the neighbours: keep it down at night and avoid chatting in the corridor when you leave.
  • Entry instructions: self check-in venues send instructions by email and WhatsApp before the start, so read them before you set off.
