Getting there
Tai Wai is the interchange between the East Rail and Tuen Ma lines, which makes it one of the best-connected stops in the eastern New Territories. On the East Rail line it is one stop from Kowloon Tong and runs straight north to Sha Tin, Tai Po and Sheung Shui. On the Tuen Ma line it runs east to Che Kung Temple, Sha Tin Wai and Ma On Shan, and west via Diamond Hill, Kai Tak and Hung Hom to the north-west New Territories.
There are also plenty of buses and minibuses to Sha Tin town centre and the nearby estates. Streets in Tai Wai are narrow and busy at weekends, so allow time for parking if you drive.
What venues are like here
Tai Wai is mostly housing and older street-level shops. Venues are usually in mixed-use or small commercial buildings near the station, mid-sized and suited to groups of around ten. There are also a few industrial buildings with larger units. Buildings near the station range from new to old, and older ones may have small lifts, so if you are bringing a lot of food, decorations or equipment, check the venue page or ask the host first.
For a big group, or for photo and rehearsal studios, also search nearby Fo Tan and Shek Mun, both reachable from Tai Wai without changing trains.
What it's good for
- Friends' gatherings: the interchange makes it easy for people coming from different districts.
- Family birthdays: there are many estates around Tai Wai and Che Kung Temple, so local families can walk over.
- A ride and a party: the Shing Mun River cycle track is close by, so you can cycle in the day and meet up in the evening.
