Getting there
Fanling station is on the East Rail line between Tai Wo and Sheung Shui, direct from Kowloon Tong, Mong Kok East and Admiralty. There is a bus terminus and minibus stand by the station, and buses and minibuses connect to Luen Wo Hui, On Lok Tsuen and the surrounding villages.
Outside the town centre the area is open, so driving is usually easier than in the city, and some countryside venues have parking. Village roads are narrow and poorly lit at night, so drive carefully.
What venues are like here
Venues in Fanling fall into three groups:
- Town-centre mixed-use buildings: near Fanling station and Luen Wo Hui, mid-sized, good for small gatherings and classes.
- On Lok Tsuen industrial area: east of Fanling, one of the larger concentrations of industrial buildings in the New Territories, with big units for large parties and events.
- Village houses and outdoor spaces: there are still many villages and farmland around Fanling, and some venues have gardens, rooftops or BBQ areas.
Countryside venues are very quiet at night, so keep the volume down for the neighbours. For industrial buildings, follow the building's rules and the host's entry instructions.
What it's good for
- North district family gatherings: families in Fanling, Sheung Shui and Tai Po do not need to go into Kowloon.
- BBQ and outdoor parties: countryside venues have room to spread out. See BBQ venues.
- Birthdays: town-centre rooms for small groups; industrial or village-house venues for larger ones.
- A heritage walk: the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail is in Fanling, a pleasant walk with family before a gathering.
Practical tips
- For On Lok Tsuen or countryside venues, check the route and the last bus or minibus before you go.
- Countryside venues have mosquitoes in summer. Bring repellent.
- Village-house venues may have no lift. If you are bringing older relatives or a pram, ask the host first.
- For more choice, also search Sheung Shui and Tai Po.
